When I export a DWG into a PDF and then print the PDF the quality of the entities is very grey and washed out for both the lines and text. Is there some setting to improve this poor quality?

Check out your .CTB (or .STB?) pen-control settings in the plot dialog. If you have not applied any, you'll get color output by default. If the PDF-making driver is set to B/W or grayscale, you'll get washed-out B/W or gray images wherever you've used light colors.

I missed the key word "export" in your post, sorry.
I just tried the Export, and I didn't see where I had control over color vs black-white output. My output was a color PDF file. From there, if I wanted B/W, I would probably set my printer driver to change color to b/w, usually this is possible. If there is a better way to control Export settings that don't appear on the dialog, I hope someone will come here and say so!

My previous response assumed you were using PLOT, not the export process. Using plot, you can go to (probably any) Windows-configured printer driver, and have more control over colors and pens via the plot dialog. I suggest PDF995 or Adobe Acrobat itself for that.
